I attended the presentation last night about the 1:1 laptop programme. Thank you for that it was informative and my questions were answered throughout the progress of the presentation, so that demonstrates that a fair amount of thought has gone into it. I think that it's great direction to be heading in and I fully support it. My only reservation at this stage is the extra weight of carrying the laptop around in the girls bags. I guess it will be an extra 2 or 3 kilos to cart about. My question would be since year 8s will only have the device for a year has it been considered that the younger ones have a smaller netbook rather than a full blown laptop? The netbook would be smaller and lighter and I would imagine that it would also be able to cope with their needs in year 8. I understand that for 4 years and higher year levels a bit more computing power my be necessary but since the year 8s only have it for a year maybe it would be reasonable option.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback and comments of support. We do appreciate you taking the time to comment on the evening, the program and information presented. 

The ICLT Committee has investigated all options regarding type of laptop, being very mindful of the weight of each device, students will be carrying from class to class and in their bags to and from home. The laptop we have selected weighs 2.6 kg. 

The vision is that as many of the textbooks move to CD, that we will be able to load these onto the hard drive or students can access via the intranet. This will reduce the load they currently carry to compensate for the addition of the laptop.  

We have discussed and investigated the value of the netbook and these coupled with the many presentations we have attended on 1:1 Laptop programs, has encouraged and directed us to consider laptops from Dell or HP as the best option. 

We are aware as we roll out that new laptops are coming onto the market and have given some consideration to the Dell Latitude 13, which is certainly less weighty. Unfortunately, the timing does not suit our rollout to Year 10 and I cannot answer at this stage, whether it will work for our Year 8 & 9 rollout.
