St. Mary’s College - Curriculum

St Mary’s College aims to educate young women to be reflective and self-directed, empowering them to live out Christ’s mission contributing positively to the changing world.

St Mary’s College provides a comprehensive curriculum that caters for all pathways from strongly academic to provision for vocational education studies. The curriculum incorporates a Religious Education program delivered across the year levels, integral to the faith life of the community and a Pastoral Care program which provides for the delivery of life skills, career education and the nurturing of the individual.

The Year 8 Curriculum is designed to facilitate a smooth transition into secondary school while introducing the students to a broad base of subjects. The curriculum is integrated into two Core areas:

            Core 1: Religious Education, English and Social Science

            Core 2: Mathematics and Science

Learning and teaching in these Core areas occurs through connected topics or themes. Each Core subject is taught by the same teacher, providing an opportunity for enhancing teacher student relationships and providing a structured supportive learning environment where this consistency of contact facilitates the transition to secondary school. Students also study in the Key Learning Areas of Health and Physical Education, The Arts (Visual Art, Drama and Music), Technology (Computing, Home Economics and Business) and Languages other than English.

The College offers the opportunity for students to study two Languages other than English, namely Japanese and Spanish. These programs are further enhanced by cultural exchanges and cultural tours to foreign countries including Japan and Spain.

In Years 8-10, the programs of study are based on Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) syllabus and the Religious Education program is based on the Archdiocesan Religious Education Guidelines. In Year 9 and 10 students are given more opportunity to design their own course of study, by selecting from electives. The core subjects of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science and Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE) complete their course of study maintaining a broad base to assist in their preparation for the Senior Years.

The Senior Years, which commence in Year 10, have been designed to provide for multiple pathways to a range of training, employment and career opportunities. St Mary’s College fosters a spirit of academic excellence and caters for the variety of subject interests amongst students. Students are involved in an extensive Career Education program, which has a focus in Year 10 (during Transition Week), to assist the girls in determining the best course of study to ensure their success and attainment of the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Students can opt to incorporate into their study the following;

            Structured Workplace Learning

            Work Experience

            School Based Traineeship / Apprenticeship

            TAFE Courses

These feature heavily in students who elect a pathway with a vocational focus.

St Mary’s College is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and is fully accredited by the National Body to offer a range of Vocational Education and Training courses. These include a Certificate I in Business, Certificate II in Business, Certificate I in Retail Services, Certificate II in Retail, Certificate I in Tourism and Certificate II in Tourism (Operations).

The Learning Enrichment Centre provides assistance in the area of learning for those who need further assistance or additional extension. The College has a priority for the integration of technology to enhance learning and this is evident in the facilities and access to technology, as the College introduces the 1:1 ratio of computers to students as outlined by the Federal Government.

The girls are provided with the opportunity to participate in a number of competitions to support their learning in the classroom and assist in providing opportunities for extension. These include –
