Captain's Address

At our Opening Liturgy, St Mary's College Captain Rachael McNamara addressed the school community. Below is an excerpt from her speech.

It is a great privilege to be before you alongside such an amazing Senior class for 2022, and to be following in the footsteps of the St Mary's College legacy. Each year we walk through those gates, we experience the sisterhood we share with each other. A bond that is so strong, making every day one to look forward to. Not only do we share this as students but also with the staff and our families. Our St Mary's College community is built on the mercy tradition, one that as students we aspire to continue in our schooling life.

Throughout 2022 we can unpack our theme for this year, “Let your light shine". In our schooling adventures lets help others, try something new, be proud of your achievements, and most importantly help spread your light to others.

To the senior class of 2022, may we all be lights, guiding students to be the epitome of a Mary's student. Someone who values and displays our pillars; education, spirituality, hospitality, mission and community.  This is our final year of schooling, let's make the most of every opportunity, and seize being in service to others. I feel we're all too quick to count down the days; that we forget to make the days count.

2022 can be a year of great things. Remember that “Sometimes your limitations can be a launching pad into an unexpected story" – Dana Tanamachi. Embrace the sisterhood and the strength of this community and always care for your own wellbeing. I believe this year we as the senior cohort are going to be leaders of mercy, following in the footsteps of both Jesus and Catherine McAuley. Keeping this in mind, Muriel Strode once said “I will not follow where the path may lead, but I will go where there is no path, and I will leave a trail".
